Pictorial Week: Japanese Bar Codes

I have decided that the rest of this week and the weekend will be Pictorial Week, that is, the emphasis will be on things pictorial and on photographs.

First up: Japanese bar codes.

Bar codes are those parallel lines on labels that shop assistants scan for product identification and pricing. For a glimpse into the future, the movie Back to the Future 2 uses a barcode licence plate . . .

Which brings us to the imaginative people of Japan, who have turned barcodes into promotional material and objects of art, often depicting pictorially the item or business that they are connected to.  Their use has also now spread from Japan to other countries.
